Young people with lived experience of homelessness understand the urgent need for positive change in our communities more than most. That’s why youth voice and political engagement are so important in shaping Australia’s future.
With the Federal Election only months away, we were excited to welcome Federal MP Aaron Violi and Greens candidate for Casey, Dr Merran Blair, to the Lilydale Youth Foyer. They spoke about the power of the youth vote, why young people should engage in politics, and how elections impact issues like youth homelessness and housing security.
Both shared personal stories about their journey into politics and what inspired them to run for office. They also provided an overview of how voting works, what first-time voters need to know, and most importantly—how to register to vote.
With the election fast approaching and their schedules becoming even busier, this was a great opportunity for Foyer students to have their voices heard, ask questions, and engage directly with decision-makers.
The Foyer students highlighted that housing insecurity, rental stress, and homelessness were specific issues and threats to the the wellbeing of young people across Australia and that their voices in this election matter more than ever.
The best part of this event? It was initiated and presented by one of the passionate young Foyer students themselves, who reached out to Aaron and Merran, and got the other Foyer students interested.
