The Houses at Parliament campaign brought representatives from the homelessness sector together to raise our collective voices to call for more urgency on the housing crisis.
6,000 origami houses took over the steps of the Victorian Parliament this week, recognising a portion of the 60,000 houses that need building if the state is going to be able to meet demand and remedy rising homelessness rates.
Our very own Colleen Sweeny and Adele Sutters were involved as marshals on the day, helping to set up the display and escort MPs.
They were joined by Heidi, Tyrell, and one of our Board members, Sharika.
The message on the day was clear: with 30,000 people homeless every night in Victoria, it is beyond a question whether more needs doing to address homelessness – action is needed now.
It was pleasing to see all sides of politics in attendance and committed to listening to the needs of the homelessness sector. The Minister for Housing and Homelessness, Harriet Shing, also noted how vital it was for the voices of lived-experience to help guide solutions and action.
Anchor spoke with a number of MPs from our service area, including Bridget Vallence MP (Evelyn), Daniela De Martino MP, (Monbulk) and Emmu Vulin MP (Pakenham). We also connected with colleagues and contacts from across the sector.
It is encouraging to maintain good relationships with our locaol elected officials and to know that they are always open to hearing more about Anchor and our work in the community.
