Supporting people experiencing homelessness takes more than the work of one organisation.

It takes communities, local businesses, volunteers, frontline workers and supporters coming together to make a difference.

This week, we were proud to see a room full of community supporters gather for the Homelessness Community Fundraiser, an evening focused on connection, collaboration and supporting people experiencing homelessness in the Yarra Ranges.

The event was organised by Anchor Community Care, Stable One, Holy Fools and Yarra Ranges Council, bringing together community members, volunteers, frontline workers and local representatives in support of people doing it tough.

With winter and the Australian Census driving much of the recent work across the homelessness sector, the evening was also a valuable opportunity to pause and recognise what can be achieved when a community works together.

Community action in support of homelessness services

A highlight of the evening was a screening of the short documentary, The Ranch, which explores the experiences of people facing homelessness in the Mornington Peninsula community.

The event also included a silent auction and donations, with funds raised going towards supporting the work of Anchor, Holy Fools and Stable One.

Guests were generously supported with food provided by the Rapid Relief Team, helping create a welcoming space for people from across the community to come together.

While homelessness can feel like an overwhelming issue, events like this are a reminder that every act of support can contribute to something bigger.

Whether through fundraising, volunteering, donating goods, sharing skills or simply learning more about homelessness, communities have an important role to play alongside homelessness services.

Launching a new way for local businesses to help

The evening also marked the launch of the Kirrip Card, a new community initiative designed to connect Anchor’s clients with participating local businesses.

The card brings together local businesses willing to provide people supported by Anchor with access to basic goods and practical support when they need it.

It is a simple idea with the potential to make a meaningful difference: connecting the generosity and resources that already exist within the community with people who may otherwise go without.

The Kirrip Card is another example of how collaboration can create new pathways for supporting people experiencing homelessness.

Homelessness is a community challenge

There is no single solution to homelessness.

People experience homelessness for many different reasons and often need different forms of support. Access to safe housing is essential, but people may also need help with health, relationships, employment, education and reconnecting with their community.

That’s why strong collaboration matters.

When homelessness organisations, local government, businesses, volunteers and community members work together, they can create stronger networks of support around people experiencing homelessness.

The Homelessness Community Fundraiser was a celebration of those connections—and a reminder that coming together is one of the most powerful things a community can do.

Anchor Community Care is grateful to everyone who attended, contributed and helped make the evening possible. Together with our partners and supporters, we can continue working towards a community where more people have access to the support, stability and opportunities they need.

Want to make a difference?

There are many ways to support people experiencing homelessness in our community. Whether through donating, volunteering, partnering with Anchor or supporting local fundraising initiatives, every contribution helps strengthen the network of support around people who need it.
