At last week’s National Sorry Day event in Knox, Bangerang, Taungurung and Wiradjuri Elder, Aunty Esme Bamblett made an incredible speech to the gathered crowd.

Speaking about the reconciliation journey, Aunty Esme made a very simple call to action: “Don’t be a bystander. Be an upstander.”

Her powerful words provided a lot of clarity and energy to the Anchor staff who attended the Sorry Day ceremony, and underscore Anchor’s full commitment to Reconciliation.

Following the deeply moving ceremony in Knox, Anchor staff also headed out to Healesville the following day to attend the Yarra Ranges Council’s National Reconciliation Week event.

Again, the stories, music and discussion on the experience of Aboriginal people across 200 years of white-settlement brought the same call for commitment to equality, and dedication to truth-telling.

We thank all event organisers and the incredible speakers and Elders who made these events so special.

Anchor acknowledges the Traditional Owners of the lands on which we work: The Wurundjeri, Bunurong/Boonwurrung, and GunaiKurnai peoples.
