For young people leaving the care system, the transition to independence can be a challenging time.
Without the right support, young people transitioning from care can face significant barriers to finding stable housing, building financial independence, continuing education or employment, and developing the skills and connections they need to thrive.
This is where long-term community support can make a lasting difference.
At Anchor Community Care, our MyLife Project works alongside young people as they transition from care, providing stability and trusting relationships that help them develop the skills, confidence and practical foundations they need to build an independent future and avoid homelessness.
The difference long-term donors can make
Creating meaningful change for young people experiencing disadvantage isn’t always about one-off acts of generosity. Long-term support from donors and community groups allows organisations like Anchor to continue investing in young people and developing the support they need over time.
The Bellbirds Ladies Golf group has been a long-term supporter of Anchor, helping us continue our work across the community.
Recently, Anchor’s Business Development Manager met with members of the Bellbirds to thank them for their ongoing support and share more about the work Anchor is doing with young people.
The conversation included a particular focus on MyLife, following the group’s interest in our recent fundraising campaign and the story of Mia and her experiences being supported in MyLife.
While the Bellbirds have supported Anchor’s broader work over many years, their interest in MyLife highlights the importance of community changemakers who recognise that preventing youth homelessness often starts well before a young person reaches a homelessness service.
Helping young people avoid homelessness
Young people leaving care can face a particularly difficult transition to independence. They may be navigating housing, education, employment, finances and relationships while also learning how to manage life independently.
Having a trusted person to turn to and practical support during this period can help create greater stability and reduce the risk of homelessness.
Through MyLife, Anchor works with young people to help them develop the knowledge, skills and confidence they need for independent living.
That can include supporting young people to navigate practical challenges, strengthen their connections and work towards their own goals.
The aim is all about early intervention and prevention—helping young people at risk to build a stronger foundation before homelessness occurs.
Changemakers create lasting impact
Community donors play an important role in helping Anchor to be innovative and break barriers for children and young people at risk of homelessness.
Across our 50 year history, the partnership between Anchor and people in the community who support our mission is what has made the biggest difference in changing people’s lives for the better.
When individuals, businesses and community groups choose to support organisations working with young people, their contribution can help create opportunities that extend far beyond a single moment.
For Anchor, long-term donors like the Bellbirds are part of a wider community of changemakers making a difference in the lives of young people.
Their support helps us continue working alongside young people experiencing disadvantage and strengthens our ability to provide practical, consistent support when it matters.
We are grateful to the Bellbirds Ladies Golf group for their longstanding support of Anchor and for taking the time to learn more about MyLife and the difference this work can make.
